Life Hacks For Dyslexics 1, Why am I able to read on my phone better then from a book or computer screen - Sweet Bunny

Photo by Lacie Slezak on Unsplash

One evening I was laying in bed reading an article when it stroked me. Why was I able to browse through the article without my usual pauses?

Being dyslexic, having a hard time getting through books, magazines and almost everything word or number related is just a part of daily life. I get mentally drained after a few sentences and would need to take a break. I had a tendency to read the same line twice but thankfully I would always take notice and read the next line. I used to use my finger to guide my reading but in primary school, I was discouraged in doing so, well I guess the teacher didn't want me to be dependent on the tracing of words.

With further research online on why reading was so much easier on the screen of my phone, I stumbled upon an article stating that a professor who has dyslexia found it easier to mark his students' scripts when he scanned it and used a smaller screen to get through each document. Fewer words of text per line and shorter lines were the keys to enabling a dyslexic to read at a greater speed.  It is indeed very refreshing to find another trick in making reading easier for us. There is not a day that I don't use clever tricks to get by work and daily life.

I can't speak for everyone who is dyslexic that this will work because we all have different types, combinations and are at spectrums of learning disability. We all learn in different ways, for example, I never like audiobooks, although I am an auditory learner, I find it annoying and disruptive and prefer to find out the pronunciation of only the words I don't know. The key to improving ourselves is finding the way that works for you, the method that makes you most productive.

In my teens, I was quite the bookworm but that came with a lot of training. My father constantly reminded me that our brain is a muscle in which practice makes perfect. He was right I kept on reading and in time my build up the stamina for it.  I was in a mainstream school and was able to catch up with a lot of hard work and help from my friends who gladly tutored me. However as I moved on to the working life and had less time to read I was back to square one, I lost the stamina. I guess to me reading is like a sport.

Don't ever give up, when there is a will there is a way. We might fail in our studies or in any other task we are given in life but no matter what don't stop trying to search for what you are good in and build up that strength. There is also no such thing as everyone knows that skill, it is too common, a skill is a skill and only you can do it your own unique style.

After I told my father about my "discovery" he bought me a  Kindle Paperwhite – Now Waterproof with 2x the Storage - 8 GB (International Version). I am very blessed to have such a supportive father. With the kindle, I can read more books without worrying that I will ruin my eyesight.

My Wedding Journey 6 - Selecting Venues for Pre-Wedding Shoot in Singapore - Sweet Bunny

In my pre-wedding package, I was given 2 locations for outdoor shoots and 1 indoor studio shoot.

When you have a pre-wedding shoot coordinator who is very inflexible and a wet blanket you have to get creative with the locations of your wedding photoshoot.

Xiao Ting practically cancelled out every venue we requested and kept pushing for fort canning park. I was so angry with her at one point that I blasted that it is a graveyard for goodness sake. Lower Peirce Reservoir she said if we didn’t know the exact location it would be difficult for the driver.  Coney Island she said it would be difficult long walk … Garden Asia, too far not possible.  I wondered then how was it possible for the couples in her samples to go to all these places for a photo shoot in the first place?

Yet, it was a blessing in disguise. It was raining cats and dogs on the day of my photoshoot, but that story is to be told in another post...

Toa Payoh Park, forgotten place for prewedding photoshoots -  I have to thank The Smart Locals for writing about the park, I just adored the bridges at first sight of the photos of them very charming. It so happens that it was a popular spot for prewedding photos to be taken back in the 1970s. The park was also a "testing ground" for building a Japanese styled park before they started on The Japanese Gardens in Jurong. I took a bus down one Sunday afternoon and the park was bustling with maids on their day off having a picnic they played music and were dancing. I was pretty tempted to join in their fun, I am glad that our parks were put to good use there for everyone to enjoy. It was kept very clean as everyone cleaned up after themselves. My wedding shoot would take place on a weekday so it would be less crowded.

Mount Faber is a pre-wedding shoot location - I love the rainbow staircase and the lush greenery of the hilltop. Cable cars gracefully gliding by and who would forget The iconic bell of happiness but beware if you are not holding your wedding with Arbora Hilltop Dining you would have to fork out $800.00 for a photo with the bells the best part is none of this information is indicated on the companies' website.

Initially, I wanted to hire a vendor to set up a picnic site for my wedding shoot, but I was against the idea in the end because we wanted more natural photographers nothing too posed planned and faked. We didn't even bother to get any props somehow I felt they were a bit cheesy to each it's own.

I apologise if my post sounded angry, it's just the reality of wedding planning, not everything goes your way but sometimes it may be a blessing in disguise. Just enjoy the process, someday when you look back you will laugh at all the misadventures and decisions that you had to face as I often do now.

Getting Stationery During Covid-19 - Sweet Bunny

When you are working at home and have run out of stationery either for yourself or for your kids and all the shops had to shut their door during this quarantine season.

My scotch tape holder came apart and I had run out of tape while packing a parcel for a friend, normally I would pop by the popular bookstore or a hardware shop to make a purchase but they were either closed or didn't carry what I needed.

Blast... Back to the world wide web, I went...

The bigger office suppliers like Deskright, homenoffice, stationery world which all have a minimum order from $150.00 to $200.00. I didn't have that many items to purchase so I did a deeper search for more vendors.

Places to purchase basic stationery on an urgent basis during Covid19 -  All our supermarkets are open and if you are lucky enough to live near a hypermart that would be fantastic. They carry a small range of stationery such as A4 papers, pens, highlighters, tapes, notebooks, correction tape and files. Prime Supermarket even for the small outlets has a stationery corner, I managed to grab a pack of correction tape from there not my usual brand but as long as it serves it the purpose it would do for now. Some branches of Seven Elevens also have a small shelf of stationery, I saw pen knives, tape and a whole lot of pens on display during my last trip to you.

If you are able to wait for a week or so for your stationery supplies - I got my tape dispenser on Lazada for about $10 inclusive of a box of 8 rolls of 18 x 25mm tape and delivery, totally worth it. I always select local sellers to minimise the waiting time. Ezbuy and Qoo10 are also good options. They do charge a delivery fee but at times like these, it is worth pumping back some money back into the economy, providing jobs for our couriers and supporting local businesses.

Go green by purchasing second-hand stationery - If want to save the earth by reusing someone's unwanted stationery, you could make your purchase on Carousell. Yes, it is base on trust on how well the items would work but if the price is right and the seller has proved to be trust-worthy via their reviews why not? There are new items people sell off too, some items which were purchased on impulse.

Purchase toners & Printer Ink  - A colleague of mine had run out of printers toner and required it within the week. I made an order via Hachi-tech for her, Hachi-tech is the online Challenger store, trustworthy and they provide you with an official invoice so you may claim from your office petty cash once we all return to the office. You also earn points if you are a challenger member, a nice perk.

I hope this post wasn't frivolous, to me stationery are essential items.

Daily Workout Routine During Covid 19, Walk At Home Journey With Leslie Sansone - Sweet Bunny

Walk at home with Leslie Sansone on Youtube

A sudden call to work from home - It was a Monday evening when I got a message from work to start working from home, a first in my entire career.  A thousand cases were reported every day and a precaution of limiting human traffic at work and public areas were set.

Sluggish and unproductive lifestyle while working from home during Covid-19 April 2020 - Yes, I have to admit the after my wedding in October last year till April this year I was very out of shape unmotivated and downright sluggish.  I got the case of post-wedding fatigue, 2018 & 2019 was filled with endless arrangements and decision, coordination crafts and meeting. My reward was a wedding that went smoothly without a hitch, the price I paid a toll on my mental wellbeing. I was exhausted and not raring to go I was functioning but like a snappy zombie.

Hitting rock bottom and searching for a healthier lifestyle - I was tired of going through the motions of daily life and began my search for answers. Where else but the bible. I began my bible reading on good Friday. No god didn't ask me to exercise through his good book but with the guidance of the holy spirit gave me motivation. I googled no gym equipment small space and working out in an apartment,  Leslie Sansone was the result.

Leslie Sansone Walk @ home program on youtube - I started out by taking baby steps and following her weekly routine Mondays to Fridays, about a week later my stamina has improved and now I walk 3 miles daily. Sometimes I even have the urge to add in another exercise in the late evening.  The beauty of her program is that you have choices of how long you would like to walk for, be it a mile, 10 minutes, 15 minutes there are just so many videos to choose from.

Results from doing the walk @ home exercise routine - It has only been two weeks since I started the program not much difference in the weight department but I have a much toner body.  I am determined to continue with the work out program as it helps me feel energized. I don't feel as sluggish as I used to and I yawn a whole lot less. My cheeks are bright red rosy. These are the perks of exercising, healthy heart, healthy mind and endorphins, happy hormones.

Home Exercise Buddy/Bestie - My sister joins me for 45 minutes of exercise every now and then and it sure helps to motivate you to push on. Get your family members to join you cause Leslie Sansone's walk at-home exercises is made for people of all ages. The moves may seem simple but they really pack a punch.

The thing about exercise is that you have to keep searching for what you can enjoy and what you can withstand. When you don't like some form of exercise chances are you won't stick to it. Keep searching and never stop trying until you find the right fit.

A Frantic Search For Ensure Plus Coffee during the Covid19 Circuit Break - Sweet Bunny

This has to be the first time in my life that I encountered empty shelves in the supermarket, stability and peace should never be taken for granted. Overstocking food and essentials at home are just plain selfish actions, a me-first mentality is not the way to go. Especially at times like these, Covid-19 has really shaken the world. We should all be united and help one another instead of playing a finger-pointing game of whose fault the virus is. Lives are lost every day and most saddening part is the elderly are the most vulnerable group.

My family member who has cancer depends on the milk feed Ensure for daily nutrient. He does not have the appetite for food so the milk feed is a great supplement that keeps him from wasting away.

No stock of Ensure Plus Coffee till June 2020 - This was what I was told by my usual vendor Tong Hai Department Store. We were down to our last 5 bottles. My family member was adorable he kept telling me it is ok I will ration my milk feed. It doesn't help much that this is the only flavour that he likes but when you are sick and everything tastes like crap because your taste butts are messed up by the countless medications you have to take on a daily basis, I think is a small price to pay to get your love one something that gives them a bit of relieve.

Scouring the internet for elderly care supply vendors -  I went to several websites in my search for Ensure being sold in cartons of 30 bottles, A single bottle on its own retail at SGD$3.10. While a Carton of 30 costs from SGD$72.00 to SGD$81.00 about SGD$12.00 difference. I made sure the I looked through all the reviews to ensure each vendor I listed below had good reviews and minimal complains. I hope the list would be useful.

Tong Hai Department Store - $72.00/carton of ’30s Free Delivery for 3 Cartons

Rehab Mart -  $75.00 Free Delivery for above $150.00 purchases - very kind and responsible store check will all their physical store plus a warehouse for me and called me back on the same day.

Lazada Mall - 14 bottles at $33.40

National Health Care Group Pharmacy - $78.00 per carton 30 bottles of free delivery.
I managed to get 3 cartons which were the maximum that you are allowed to order from NHG Pharmacy, the also provided free delivery for purchases above SGD$150.00. Excellent service, they called an hour before they delivered the milk and the delivery guy was very helpful making sure that I could carry the stock into my home before he left.

Ntuc FairPrice Extra Hougang One  - I managed to get a few bottles at $3.10 to last the few days before my delivery arrived.

When I have a little extra, I always believe in giving it to the less fortunate, they need our support even more than ever now. https://www.giving.sg/ is an excellent portal to lend a helping hand during this epidemic. Instead of me myself and my own needs and wants. Let us help one another to get out of this dire situation united as one. Be a person of substance.
